Wolfsburg, Germany - Despite the growing trend towards electric vehicles, Volkswagen (VW) anticipates that internal combustion engines will account for the vast majority of its sales in 2023.
According to VW executives, as many as 90% of vehicles sold by the automaker in 2023 will be equipped with combustion engines. This is a significant increase from 2022, when combustion engines accounted for 70% of VW's sales.
The decision to maintain a strong focus on combustion engines is driven by several factors, including the high cost of electric vehicles, the limited availability of charging infrastructure, and the continued popularity of gasoline-powered cars among consumers.
VW's decision is in line with the broader automotive industry trend. While many automakers have announced long-term plans to switch to electric vehicles, the transition is expected to take several years.
However, VW has also announced that it will halt the development of new combustion engines by 2026. The company plans to focus on electric vehicles and other alternative powertrains from that point forward.
The company's decision to continue producing combustion engines in the short term while investing in electric vehicles in the long term is seen as a pragmatic approach to the transition to a carbon-neutral future.
