EU Parliament Votes to Ban Combustion Engine Cars

No More New Petrol or Diesel Vehicles from 2035

Historic Decision Marks Major Shift to Electric Vehicles

The European Parliament has voted overwhelmingly in favour of a ban on new petrol and diesel cars from 2035. The landmark decision signals a major shift towards electric vehicles in the fight against climate change.

The vote, which passed with 340 votes in favour, 279 against and 21 abstentions, follows months of negotiations between the European Parliament, the European Council and the European Commission. It is the culmination of a long-standing push by environmental groups to reduce transport emissions, which account for a significant portion of greenhouse gas pollution in Europe.

The ban will cover all new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, including hybrids and plug-in hybrids. However, it will not apply to heavier vehicles such as trucks, buses and coaches. The ban is expected to come into force in 2035, although manufacturers will be able to continue to sell existing models until 2040.

The decision has been welcomed by environmental groups, who say it will help to reduce air pollution and curb greenhouse gas emissions. The International Council on Clean Transportation estimates that the ban could reduce EU CO2 emissions by 37% by 2030 and 60% by 2035. However, the ban has also been criticized by some in the automotive industry, who say it could lead to job losses and higher vehicle costs.

Despite the opposition, the ban is a clear signal that the EU is serious about tackling climate change. The decision is likely to have a ripple effect across the global automotive industry, as manufacturers race to develop and produce electric vehicles that meet the new standards.
